The evolution of the bargaining society. politico-economic dependencies in Sweden

PETER HEDSTRÖM

Department of Sociology, Harvard University William James Hall, 33 Kirkland Street, Cambridge, Mass. 02138, USA

A centralized neo-corporatist bargaining system between leading representatives of trade unions, employer confederations, and the state has been established in Sweden. In this essay, an explanation of this phenomenon is offered which emphasizes the strategic behavior of the actors involved. The growth of the public sector, the improved potential for collective action among wage earners, and the internationalization of trade have produced a new system of interaction which explains the actors' choices to participate in the centralized bargaining process.
